Hautes-Chaumes du Forez, Natural plateau region in Massif Central, France
The Hautes-Chaumes du Forez is a high plateau in the Massif Central, covered with heathland and peat bogs. The terrain sits at high elevation and is crossed by streams fed by the waterlogged ground.
The area was once forested and was gradually cleared during the Middle Ages to create open grazing land. Seasonal settlements then grew up to support livestock and dairy farming during the summer months.
Shepherds built summer shelters here called jasseries to tend their herds and make cheese. These stone buildings are still visible today and show a way of life closely tied to the seasons.
The weather on the plateau is harsher than in the surrounding valleys, with heavy rain and long snow cover in winter. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear and warm layers, as conditions can change quickly at any time of year.
The old settlements had a clever water system that kept meltwater and rainwater separate for different uses. This shows how carefully the inhabitants managed the resources of this wet highland.
