Hôtel de Jarnac, Private mansion in 7th arrondissement, Paris, France

Hôtel de Jarnac is a neoclassical hôtel particulier at 8 rue Monsieur, built in 1784 by Étienne-François Legrand. Its cream stone facade has two tall arched ground-floor windows with metal grilles, barred rectangular windows above, and a lower section with a dark grey double door under a round-headed pediment with a carved keystone. A stone balustrade runs above the doorway before a grey slate roof.

Built in 1784 by Étienne-François Legrand, architect of the hôtel de Galliffet, as a rental property for Léonard Chapelle, it was immediately leased to Marie-Charles-Rosalie de Rohan-Chabot, comte de Jarnac, who gave the house its name. In 1828 the comte de Villèle moved in after leaving the presidency of the Council. Sold in 1834 to the surgeon Guillaume Dupuytren, who died there the following year, it passed through the hands of the princesse Soltykoff and the duchesse de Valençay before being bought in 2022 by the Ukrainian billionaire Kostyantin Zhevago for 35.5 million euros.

The name comes from Marie-Charles-Rosalie de Rohan-Chabot, Count of Jarnac, who leased the newly built house in 1784. Inside, the grand salon has three false round-arched bays filled with mirrors facing the three garden French windows, and overdoor panels showing allegories of the Four Elements.

The mansion is a private residence at 8 rue Monsieur, in the 7th arrondissement; the courtyard and garden are not open to visitors, so the facade is seen from the street. The building, its outbuildings and garden have been classified as monuments historiques since 6 February 1939.

The building was engraved by the German-born printmaker Johann Georg Krafft, whose plates record the courtyard and garden elevations. The grand salon's overdoor panels show allegories of the Four Elements, and its arabesque panels match those in the state bedroom of the Hôtel de Galliffet, both by the same architect, Étienne-François Legrand.
