Hommage à Arago, Installation artwork in Paris, France
Hommage à Arago is an art installation consisting of 135 bronze medallions set into the ground along the Paris meridian. These small plaques mark an invisible north-south line that runs through the city.
Artist Jan Dibbets created this installation in 1994 to replace a former monument to François Arago that had been removed during World War II. The medallions reference the scientist's work on measuring the Earth and his contributions to astronomy and mathematics.
The medallions extend through six different Paris districts, connecting urban spaces while marking the astronomical and mathematical achievements of François Arago.
The installation spreads across the city, so planning a route helps you discover multiple medallions along the way. You can spot these small objects on sidewalks and squares by looking down for the engraved bronze discs embedded in the pavement.
The installation forms an invisible line through Paris, with medallions placed in locations from the Luxembourg Gardens to the Louvre and Montmartre.
