Jardin des Plantes de Rouen, Botanical garden in Rouen, France

The Jardin des Plantes is an 8.5-hectare botanical garden on the left bank of the Seine in Rouen, holding 5,600 plant species. A long perspective runs from the central greenhouse (1839-1842) to the place des Martyrs-de-la-Résistance, lined with a butterfly mosaiculture and a Parrotia persica and Ginkgo biloba planted in the 1840s. The garden also holds a 670 m² rose garden, tropical greenhouses rebuilt in 2020, a late-17th-century pavilion and an 1895-1896 orangery.

Louis de Carel, president of the Cour des aides, bought forest land of the Rouvray in 1691, walled it and built the double pavilion. The Scottish banker John Law bought it in 1719; from 1741 it opened to the public as the Jardin de Madame Planterose. Rouen bought the Trianon estate in 1832 to move its botanical garden there, and it opened under the name Jardin des Plantes in 1840.

The garden's main allée runs from the Grande Serre to the place des Martyrs-de-la-Résistance, with a mosaiculture butterfly on one side and a Parrotia persica and a Ginkgo biloba planted in the 1840s. The monogram "P.M." on the main gate recalls Marie Planterose, owner until the Revolution. A stone bust of writer Eugène Noël by Alphonse Guilloux (1905) stands in the grounds, and a runic stone given by Norway in 1911 marks the Norman millennium.

The garden lies on the left bank of the Seine, reachable from place and avenue des Martyrs-de-la-Résistance, rue Dufay and rue de Trianon; the address is 7, rue de Trianon. Eight of its eight and a half hectares are open to the public, with the main axis running from the central greenhouse to the place des Martyrs-de-la-Résistance. A snack hut near the children's playground and the Art Deco bandstand serves food in high season.

Two commemorative plaques on the orangery recall the aeronauts: Sophie Blanchard's solo balloon ascent in 1806 and Élisa Garnerin's parachute descent from a balloon in 1817. Jean-Pierre Blanchard had made his 54th ascent here in 1803.
