La Lanterne, Presidential retreat near Palace of Versailles, France
La Lanterne is a hunting lodge in Versailles featuring a U-shaped layout with two stories and approximately 35 doors leading to the grounds. The four-hectare walled property includes a swimming pool and tennis court.
Built in 1787 for a French nobleman, the lodge became state property during the French Revolution. It later became part of the Crown Estate under subsequent administrations.
The lodge served as the Prime Minister's private retreat for generations before becoming a presidential residence in 2007. Today, it represents a shift in how French leaders use their official resting places.
The residence is located about 30 minutes from the Élysée Palace and is heavily guarded. A no-fly zone above the property adds an extra layer of security.
The name comes from the exceptional natural light that floods the building through its numerous doors. This luminous quality was a defining feature from its earliest years.
