Laser Mégajoule
Laser Mégajoule is a large research facility with 176 laser beams located in Le Barp in the Gironde region of southwestern France. The building houses a spherical experimental chamber roughly 10 meters (33 feet) in diameter, constructed with thick aluminum walls covered by concrete layers.
The project began in 1996 with an initial construction phase spanning over ten years and costing more than three billion euros. Test systems like the earlier Laser Integration Line provided essential groundwork before the main facility became operational in the first half of the 2000s.
The name Laser Mégajoule refers to the energy output the system produces, reflecting French research ambitions. The facility shapes the landscape through its imposing architecture and represents economic importance and scientific achievement for the local community.
The site is not open to public visits and serves only authorized scientific and official purposes. The facility is located in the rural Gironde region, and the building structures are visible from outside even though interior access is restricted.
The facility operates the Laser PETAL, commissioned in 2015 and recognized as Europe's most powerful laser. This additional system is used for physics experiments and medical research, extending the facility's purpose beyond its original role.
