Mont Mouchet, Mountain summit in Haute-Loire, France
Mont Mouchet is a mountain summit in Haute-Loire, sitting at the point where the departments of Cantal, Haute-Loire, and Lozère meet. On clear days the views reach far across the Massif Central plateau.
In June 1944, the mountain became a main base for French Resistance fighters operating against German forces in the region. The fighting that followed left a deep mark on the memory of the surrounding departments.
A monument at the top carries sculptures honoring resistance fighters and an eternal flame for an unknown Maquis soldier. Visitors can walk around it and read the names carved into the stone.
Marked trails lead to the top and allow walkers to move around the plateau at their own pace. Spring and autumn tend to offer more stable weather for the climb.
In June 1944, several thousand Maquis fighters faced a far larger German force here, in one of the biggest open battles of the French Resistance on home soil. The engagement remains little known outside the region, even though it was one of the most direct confrontations between the Resistance and the Wehrmacht.
