The Musée d'Art et d'Archéologie de Valence occupies the former bishop's palace at 4 place des Ormeaux, facing the Saint-Apollinaire cathedral in the Vieux Valence quarter. Its 35 rooms are spread over five levels, with archaeology on the ground floor and upper levels and the art collections below. Architect Jean-Paul Philippon's 2009–2013 extension raised the surface from 2,000 to 5,750 m², added a contemporary wing and a rooftop belvedere, and opened views over the city and the Rhône.

The museum was officially founded in 1850 by a municipal council decision, though a first museum of arts may have been created by revolutionaries. It has occupied the former bishop's palace since the early 20th century; the building's classical 18th-century design is attributed to Bishop Alexandre Milon de Mesme (bishop 1726–1771). Architect Jean-Paul Philippon expanded it from 2,000 to 5,750 m² between 2009 and December 2013, adding a belvedere and a contemporary wing.

The museum keeps the largest group of works by Hubert Robert, the 18th-century painter known as "Robert des Ruines", after the Louvre and the Hermitage. Flemish and Dutch painting, French landscapes and Italian still lifes represent the other schools, alongside ceramics, coins and furniture.

The museum stands at 4 place des Ormeaux in the Vieux Valence quarter, facing the Saint-Apollinaire cathedral, so it is reached on foot through the old town. Its 35 rooms are laid out over five levels, with stairs and lifts linking them; the archaeology collections occupy the ground floor and continue on the fourth and fifth levels, and the circuit moves back in time as you descend. A belvedere added in the 2013 extension gives a 360° view over the Drôme and Ardèche landscape.

The museum's Hubert Robert holdings, including many red-chalk drawings, rank with those of the Louvre and the Hermitage as among the most complete in the world. The 18th-century French painter was nicknamed "Robert des Ruines" for his ruin scenes.
