Nantes Courthouse, Courthouse in Nantes, France

The Nantes Courthouse is a judicial building with modern glass facades and transparent elements spread across 20,000 square meters. It contains courtrooms, administrative offices, and all necessary spaces for legal proceedings at multiple levels of jurisdiction.

The building was completed in 2000 under architect Jean Nouvel's direction through a selection process by the French Ministry of Justice. Its construction represented a new approach to how courthouses could be designed in the 21st century.

The building invites the public into its spaces with glass walls and open areas that make the judicial process feel less distant and formal. This openness reflects how many people now expect legal institutions to show their work and be accountable.

The courthouse is located on Quai François Mitterrand and is easily accessible by public transport. Visitors can attend many public hearings, but should check specific timings and requirements before visiting.

Artist Jenny Holzer integrated artistic interventions directly into the building, translating abstract ideas about justice into visual forms. Her work turns the concept of law into something you can actually see and walk through.
