Montlaurès

Montlaurès is an archaeological site on a hilltop north of Narbonne featuring remains of ancient fortification walls. Excavations have uncovered multiple layers showing how people occupied this location over extended periods.

The settlement emerged in the 5th century BCE and developed into a major trading center before Rome eventually absorbed the region. These phases of occupation demonstrate how control over the location shifted over time.

The site served as a significant meeting point for different communities over centuries, as evidenced by pottery and coins showing intensive exchange with distant cultures.

Access to the site is best on foot using marked pathways leading up the hillside. When visiting, wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection depending on the season.

The location preserves traces of at least 1500 years of human settlement in successive layers. This continuous occupation makes the site particularly valuable for understanding regional changes over time.
