Strasbourg Opera House, Opera house in Place Broglie, Strasbourg, France
The Strasbourg Opera House is a French Neoclassical building with an impressive sandstone facade on which six muse statues created by sculptor Landolin Ohmacht are placed. The interior holds approximately 1,100 seats and has a ceiling height that provides good acoustics for musical performances.
The current building was constructed in 1821 after a fire destroyed an earlier structure on this site. Following damage during the Franco-Prussian War, extensive restoration work took place in 1873.
The building serves as home to the Opéra national du Rhin, which presents a wide range of performances here that shape the cultural life of the city. These events from classical operas to contemporary concerts create a gathering place for the community.
The building sits centrally at Place Broglie and is easy to reach on foot when exploring the city. It helps to check the program schedule before your visit to catch the performances you want to see.
A plaque on the northern wall remembers the Strasbourg massacre of Jews in 1349, connecting the building site to major historical events of the city. This memorial shows how deeply the place is woven into the complex history of Strasbourg.
