Phare du Portel

Phare du Portel is an octagonal steel tower standing approximately 35 meters tall with a red lantern at its top. The structure sits on a cliff and remains visible from far across the English Channel.

Construction began in 1848 to guide ships safely through the Channel with traditional fire-based methods. The tower later received electricity in 1953 and became fully automated in 1994, reducing the need for resident keepers.

This maritime structure earned recognition as a French historical monument on December 30, 2010, preserving its architectural heritage.

The lighthouse sits along Rue du Cap and can be reached via coastal walking paths. You can take time to explore the surroundings and enjoy the Channel views from the clifftop.

The light system emits two distinct flashes every ten seconds to guide vessels through the English Channel. This regular flash pattern remains visible from great distances at night and defines the coastal skyline.
