Plage du Portel

Plage du Portel is a sandy beach on the French northern coast that stretches for several kilometers and features fine light-colored sand. The shore is connected by a paved promenade that runs along the water and provides access to changing cabins and supervised swimming areas.

The beach sits near Fort de l'Heurt, a fortification built in 1803 under Napoleon as part of coastal defense preparations. This fortress was part of broader military strategies developed along the French coast in the early 1800s.

The beach hosts Christmas celebrations where locals and visitors experience traditional customs that shape the seaside community. These seasonal gatherings reflect how the coast remains central to the area's social life and identity.

The beach offers free parking and good accessibility for visitors with mobility limitations. During summer months changing cabins and supervised swimming areas are available, making June through September the best time to visit.

At low tide the beach transforms into a land sailing arena where sail-powered vehicles glide across the wet sand. This unusual activity is rare in Europe and gives the beach a special appeal for adventurous visitors.
