Bertagne, Mountain summit in Gémenos, France.
Bertagne is a mountain summit at the western edge of the Sainte-Baume massif. Limestone cliffs and Mediterranean plants cover the slopes throughout the area.
Before 1642, an ancient ice house was built on the mountain when two merchants received royal permission to construct ice storage structures in Provence. These facilities were used to preserve ice through winter months.
The Marseille Hiking Society was established at the mountain's glacier site on March 28, 1897, marking the beginning of organized mountain activities in the region.
The hiking trail is about 9.5 kilometers long starting from Saint-Pons Park. The walk takes around 4 hours with an elevation change of about 530 meters.
On clear days, the summit offers views of the Mediterranean Sea and the islands offshore. Distant mountain ranges like Mont Lozère are also visible from the top.
