Pic du Tourond, Mountain summit in Hautes-Alpes, France

Pic du Tourond is a 2,743 m summit in the Écrins massif, in the Champsaur natural region of Hautes-Alpes, on the boundary of the Écrins National Park. Its broad, barren top of loose flat stones and pale boulders marks the tripoint of La Motte-en-Champsaur, Saint-Michel-de-Chaillol and Champoléon, above a distant valley and blue-gray peaks.

The summit lies at the tripoint of La Motte-en-Champsaur, Saint-Michel-de-Chaillol and Champoléon, on the edge of the Écrins national park. Two climbing routes, from Saint-Michel-de-Chaillol and from the hamlet of Les Fermonds in Champoléon, meet at the col de la Vénasque (or col Clémens). From there the top is reached off-trail by the south face.

The summit marks the tripoint of La Motte-en-Champsaur, Saint-Michel-de-Chaillol and Champoléon, and the two climbing routes, from Saint-Michel-de-Chaillol and from the hamlet of Les Fermonds in Champoléon, meet at the Col de la Vénasque, also called Col Clémens. The Tourond torrent rises on the Champoléon side of the peak and joins the Drac Blanc below the hamlet of Les Borels.

The hike requires good fitness and sturdy footwear as the paths can become steep and altitude affects the body. It makes sense to start early in the day and watch the weather, since conditions at the top can turn windy and cold quickly.

The Torrent du Tourond rises on the Champoléon side of the summit and joins the Mal-Cros stream before flowing into the Drac Blanc just below the hamlet of Les Borels. The Cascade de la Pisse, a cliff waterfall reached in about half an hour from the Fermonds chalets, lies on this same watercourse.
