Néron

Néron is a limestone peak in the Chartreuse range reaching approximately 1300 meters in elevation. Steep cliffs mark its slopes, which support Mediterranean plant species adapted to rocky terrain.

Evidence from archaeological digs shows human settlement dating back to Neolithic times. Medieval periods brought noble families and religious communities who fortified caves within the mountain.

The mountain has served various communities over time, from early inhabitants to monastic orders. This layered use reflects how people adapted to the landscape and built shelter within its limestone features.

Marked hiking trails begin from Saint-Égrève village and connect to the summit through different routes. Visits work best during dry seasons when paths are safe and visibility is good for mountain exploration.

A major fire in 2003 permanently altered vegetation on the upper slopes. This natural disruption reshaped how Mediterranean plants now spread across the burned terrain.
