Pont Lorois, Suspension bridge in Belz, France
Pont Lorois is a concrete bridge spanning 237 meters across the Ria d'Etel, connecting the Pays d'Auray to the Pays de Lorient. The structure uses steel cables and metal decking to link the two banks.
The bridge was originally built in 1851 as a toll crossing and was destroyed by bombing during World War II. It was rebuilt between 1954 and 1956 into the structure we see today.
The bridge sits near Port Niscop, where sailors created a memorial to honor their fellow mariners lost at sea. This reflects how deeply the local community is tied to the ocean and its stories.
The bridge carries the D9 route between Auray and Port-Louis and offers the only crossing between the two banks of the Ria d'Etel. Visitors can drive across or walk on the pedestrian paths, which provide views of the waterway and surrounding landscape.
The structure blends nineteenth-century stone arches on both banks with modern concrete portal frames anchored deep into the ground. This mix of old and new engineering shows how the bridge was intentionally rebuilt after its destruction.
