Pont de Châtillon-sur-Loire

The Pont de Châtillon-sur-Loire is a steel suspension bridge stretching 353 meters across the Loire River, connecting the towns of Beaulieu-sur-Loire and Briare via departmental road D50. The roadway features two traffic lanes totaling 5.50 meters in width, with separate pedestrian walkways along both sides.

The original bridge was built in 1841 following a royal decree issued in 1838 to improve river crossings in the region. Severe flooding in 1846 and 1856 caused significant damage to the structure, necessitating repairs.

The bridge serves as a vital connection for the valley's communities and is used daily by residents crossing between the two riverbanks. It has become an ordinary part of local life, though its impressive structure still catches the eye of travelers.

The bridge supports vehicle traffic up to 25 tons and provides safe passage for pedestrians via dedicated walkways on both sides. It is regularly maintained and inspected to ensure it remains in good working order for daily use.

The bridge's foundations sink approximately 40 meters deep into the Loire's alluvial soil, utilizing specialized cable systems to maintain stability. This engineering design allows the structure to withstand the powerful forces of the river.
