Square des Arènes-de-Lutèce-Capitan, Roman amphitheater park in Latin Quarter, Paris, France
Square des Arènes-de-Lutèce-Capitan extends over 1.2 hectares, featuring grassy slopes, ornamental plants, and a preserved Roman amphitheater at its center.
The park opened in 1892 after the discovery of ancient Roman reservoirs in 1869 by archaeologist Theodore Vacquer during excavations near Saint-Victor.
Local residents gather regularly to play pétanque and soccer in this public space, maintaining connections with traditional French recreational activities.
The park provides three access points through Rue Monge, Rue de Navarre, and Rue Linné, with nearby metro stations Jussieu and Place Monge.
A distinctive twisted beech tree, planted in 1905, stands among the Roman ruins that once hosted 17,000 spectators for gladiatorial contests.
