Saint-Gilles church of L'Île-Bouchard

The Saint-Gilles church is a Romanesque structure featuring a western facade with rounded arches decorated with floral and botanical motifs. A bell tower holding three bells crowns the exterior.

Construction began around 1067, establishing the building as a Romanesque structure of its era. The 15th century brought significant changes when royal patronage led to the creation of a Gothic choir.

The church serves as a focal point in the village center where locals and visitors gather to experience its spiritual space. The name Saint-Gilles reflects a patron saint tradition that shaped the spiritual identity of the community.

The building sits on Rue de la Liberté in the village center and is easy to reach on foot. Following extensive restoration work on the roof and interior spaces, visitors can explore the renewed interior.

One of the three bells dates to 1741 and earned official recognition as a French classified historical monument. This makes the bell a rare example of a preserved 18th-century ecclesiastical bell.
