Zouave du pont de l'Alma, Military statue at Pont de l'Alma, France

This limestone sculpture stands 5.2 meters tall and depicts a soldier wearing a traditional North African uniform with a fez and loose trousers.

Georges Diebolt created this statue in 1856 to commemorate the Battle of Alma, where the 3rd Zouave regiment prevailed against Russian forces.

Parisians have used the Zouave's feet as a natural gauge to measure Seine River flood levels for more than a century.

The statue stands on the right pier of Pont de l'Alma, accessible from Alma-Marceau metro station in the 8th district.

During the great flood of 1910, the Seine waters reached the shoulders of the statue, marking the highest recorded level.
