Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de La Porta

Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de La Porta, church located in Haute-Corse, in France

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de La Porta is an 18th-century church in the small mountain town built in baroque style with a prominent bell tower overlooking the main square. Inside, it contains wooden altar furnishings and a large pipe organ from the 1800s, along with paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries depicting religious scenes and saints.

The church was constructed between 1700 and 1725 by master builders Baina Domenico and Francescone, reflecting the architectural knowledge of that era. It was officially recognized and protected as a historical monument in 1975, cementing its role as a witness to local history and regional heritage.

The church is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, a saint deeply venerated in this region. The feast day of this saint remains an important occasion when locals gather here to celebrate their faith and community traditions together.

The church is located on the main square of La Porta and is easy to find, with the quiet plaza and surrounding trees creating a peaceful setting for your visit. Take your time to examine the wooden carvings, paintings, and decorative details throughout the interior, as each reflects careful craftsmanship from past centuries.

The church holds a polychrome wooden statue of Christ on the cross from the 1600s hanging in one of its chapels, demonstrating the skill of local craftsmen in creating religious art. An even older crucifix from the 1500s is also visible within the church, bearing witness to the long artistic tradition of this site.
