Lac de Soustons, Freshwater lagoon in Soustons, France
Lac de Soustons is a freshwater lagoon between Soustons and Azur municipalities that spans about 380 hectares through the Landes forest. Located just five kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean, it is surrounded by pine trees that frame the water in a woodland setting.
The lagoon is one of the last remaining wetlands in the Landes region, having escaped the drainage operations that took place during Napoleon III's reign in the 1800s. While most lakes in the area disappeared at that time, this one remained due to its conditions.
The Soustons Marensin Sailing Club brings together people of all abilities to participate in water sports through adapted programs and local competitions. This community has made the lagoon a gathering place where many enjoy sharing time on the water.
The shoreline is easily reached via Avenue de Galleben, where visitors find facilities for sailing, paddling, kayaking, and fishing. Swimming is not permitted, so visitors should focus on these specific water activities instead.
The water hosts a rare plant called water chestnut, whose sharp-edged fruits make barefoot walking impossible. Visitors must wear shoes or take care when entering the water to avoid injury from these spiky seeds.
