Château d'Opme, Medieval castle in Romagnat, France
Château d'Opme is a stone castle with five towers positioned around a central courtyard. Three towers remain standing today, and a square keep was added during the 12th century as part of the structure's development.
The castle was built in the late 11th century to control the Roman road connecting Clermont to Puy-en-Velay. Its location made it a valuable possession for the Counts of Auvergne, who ruled the region.
The gardens display formal French design with two terraces and a circular basin, showing how noble families shaped their estates. A Renaissance fountain designed by Androuet du Cerceau adds to this carefully planned layout.
The site opens for visitors from Easter through All Saints' Day, with longer hours during summer months but closed on Tuesdays. Check ahead before visiting to confirm seasonal schedules and any special arrangements.
General de Lattre de Tassigny established a military training school here in 1940 to prepare soldiers for combat. A museum dedicated to him now occupies the space, keeping his story alive for visitors.
