Château de Clermont

Château de Clermont is a ruined castle on a hilltop near Chirens with the remains of a stone keep and triple defensive walls in an irregular pentagonal shape. The structure reveals different building phases and medieval fortification systems.

The castle was founded in the 11th century by the Clermont-Tonnerre family and shaped the region for centuries. It was destroyed in 1626 on Cardinal Richelieu's orders and never rebuilt afterward.

The ruins carry the story of the Clermont-Tonnerre family and show how medieval nobles expressed their power through architecture. Locals and visitors recognize in the walls the traces of this local ruling dynasty.

The site sits on a steep hillside, so wear sturdy shoes for the uneven ground. The ruins are partially unstable, so stay within marked areas and heed warning signs for your safety.

The fortress had a clever water system where rainwater was collected in underground channels, allowing it to withstand long sieges. These technical details are still visible in the ruins today and show the ingenuity of medieval planners.
