Ouvrage Col de Brouis, Military fortification in Breil-sur-Roya, France
Ouvrage Col de Brouis is a military fortification in the French Alps near the Italian border. It consists of three concrete blocks containing artillery positions, machine gun nests, and underground installations at 871 meters elevation.
Construction of this Maginot Line fortification took place between November 1931 and October 1934. It was built as a key defensive structure protecting the southeastern border against potential Italian threats.
The fortification displays French defensive engineering methods from the 1930s using thick concrete and underground chambers. Visitors can observe how soldiers lived and worked in confined spaces while guarding the frontier.
Access to the fortification is via the D 2204 road connecting Breil and Sospel, located about one kilometer north of Monte Grosso. Sturdy footwear and caution on steep paths are important since the elevation and terrain can be challenging.
The second block houses specialized defensive positions featuring machine gun cloches and an anti-tank gun embrasure. These tight underground chambers could accommodate roughly 177 soldiers stationed here under mountain conditions.
