Écomusée du haut-pays et des transports, museum in France
The Écomusée du haut-pays et des transports is a museum in Breil-sur-Roya dedicated to the transport history of this French mountain region. The collection includes steam locomotives, electric trains, rail-motor cars, trams, buses, and trolleybuses displayed in a restored locomotive depot building from the late 1800s.
The building was constructed in the late 1800s as a locomotive depot when railways became important to the region. By the end of the 1900s, after the facility closed, the region decided to convert the site into a museum to preserve and share the transport history of the area with visitors.
The museum occupies a former locomotive depot building that still bears the marks of its industrial past with visible tracks and hangars. The exhibits reflect how local people relied on trains and buses for daily travel and how these transport links shaped life in this mountain valley.
The museum is open daily from May through September with visiting hours in the afternoon from 2 to 6 PM. Visitors can walk through the outdoor and indoor exhibits at their own pace to view the collection of restored vehicles and learn about their role in local transport history.
The museum features an HO-scale model railway that reproduces the important sites along the historic Tende line through its mountainous terrain and valley connections. This miniature layout helps visitors understand the engineering challenges of building a railway through such difficult geography and the routes it connected.
