Castle of Rennes-le-Château

This castle sits atop a hill in southern France with views across the valley of the Salz River and the surrounding mountains. The structure displays architectural features from multiple periods spanning centuries of development.

The Hautpoul family owned and maintained this fortress from medieval times through the late 18th century, making it a key regional stronghold. During this period it became an important center in the area.

The place is connected to priest Bérenger Saunière, who carried out major renovations in the nearby church during the 1890s. Visitors can see today how his work shaped the village and its surroundings in lasting ways.

The castle can be reached via a narrow mountain road from Couiza, with parking available near the village entrance about 5 kilometers away. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the path to the hilltop is uneven and includes stairs.

The Magdala Tower features a distinctive steel door that locks only from the inside, adding to the mysterious character of the location. This unusual feature reflects the various modifications made over the centuries.
