Cabrenç Towers, tours à Lamanère et Serralongue (Pyrénées-Orientales)
The Cabrenç Towers are castle ruins on a mountain ridge near Serralongue, consisting of three main structures from different periods. The castle site itself sits at nearly 1340 meters elevation and is marked by stone remains, while the signal towers were positioned at lower heights to support defense and message relay across the region.
The fortifications began in the 10th century and were expanded through the 13th century. In the 17th century, French military engineer Vauban destroyed the site following a regional uprising.
The towers stand in the Vallespir region where French and Catalan influences meet. The site carries traces of this border history in its stones and construction.
You can reach the site via marked hiking trails from Serralongue village, with different routes ranging from easy to challenging. Sturdy footwear and reasonable fitness are recommended as paths can be steep and rocky.
One tower was specially built to send smoke and fire signals that could be seen by other castles and outposts throughout the region. During the 2024 Olympic Games, 14 towers in the area were illuminated with modern lights, bringing this ancient site into the present moment.
