Collection Bemberg, Art museum in Hôtel d'Assézat, Toulouse, France
The Fondation Bemberg is an art museum located in a Renaissance mansion in Toulouse featuring European paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts. The collection spans two floors and includes works ranging from Old Masters to modern artists.
In 1994 Georges Bemberg, a wealthy Argentine collector, loaned 1,100 paintings, sculptures and art objects to the city of Toulouse for 99 years; three quarters of them went on show in the Hôtel d'Assézat, a 16th-century Renaissance mansion that Bemberg did not buy. The museum closed for renovation in 2020 and reopened on 2 February 2024 with new temporary exhibition spaces, a new display and upgraded accessibility.
The museum occupies the Hôtel d'Assézat, a 16th-century Renaissance mansion, and its name honours Georges Bemberg, the Argentine collector who lent his works to Toulouse in 1994. The Venetian room is furnished with pieces of Venetian origin and holds Canaletto vedute and Guardi landscapes. A Louis XVI room pairs French works with Chinese porcelain.
The museum is located in the heart of the old town and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors should plan for about two to three hours to comfortably browse the collections.
