Galerie de Botanique, Botanical science museum in 5th arrondissement, France
The Galerie de Botanique is a botanical research museum in the 5th arrondissement of Paris housed in an Art Deco building containing approximately eight million plant specimens. The facility is divided into two specialized research towers, one dedicated to flowering plants and one to cryptogams such as mosses and ferns.
The building was constructed between 1931 and 1935 with support from the Rockefeller Foundation as part of the National Museum of Natural History. Its construction during this period reflects the international commitment to scientific collections and research at that time.
The herbarium collection serves researchers and scientists who study plant species from around the world using preserved specimens. Visitors can understand the importance of this work by observing how systematically dried plants are organized and labeled.
The museum is located at 18 rue Buffon within the botanical garden and is currently not open for public visits. The research facilities continue to operate, but visitors can explore the exterior and the surrounding park grounds.
A cross-section of a giant sequoia tree measuring 2.70 meters in diameter is displayed as a striking exhibit within the museum. This tree slice was gifted by Sequoia National Park and demonstrates the remarkable size of these ancient trees.
