Caserne des Célestins, Military barracks in 4th arrondissement, France
The Caserne des Célestins is a military barracks complex with symmetrical buildings rising three stories, combining stone and brick on its facades. The layout centers around a courtyard where decorative elements with military themes adorn the outer walls.
The site originally housed a prestigious convent founded in 1352 that served as a religious center for centuries. It was converted into a military installation during the Consulate period and has retained that function since.
The building displays 17th-century French architectural features, with sculptures depicting soldiers and their duties shown throughout the courtyard. These visual details tell stories of military life and shape how the space feels when you walk through it.
The barracks sits near the Sully-Morland metro station, making it easy to reach from anywhere in central Paris. Its location on Boulevard Henri IV offers good foot traffic connections and is straightforward to find.
Architect Jacques Hermant used reinforced concrete for floor support but hid the material beneath traditional finishes. This early use of modern building techniques remained hidden beneath the classical exterior.
