Château de Domecy-sur-le-Vault

Château de Domecy-sur-le-Vault is a castle in Burgundy located on elevated grounds, displaying architectural features from multiple reconstruction periods throughout its history. The structure combines medieval foundations with later additions that transformed its appearance over the centuries.

The castle first appears in records in 1316 under the ownership of the d'Ostun family, who used it as their base. Over the following centuries, it changed hands repeatedly through marriages and sales among noble families.

The name comes from the village of Domecy, which developed under the d'Ostun family's rule in the area. Inside, you can see how different periods left their mark on the rooms and decorations.

The castle remains privately owned but opens occasionally for regional cultural events where visitors can explore the grounds. It is advisable to check ahead about available visiting dates, as access is limited to special occasions.

In 1899, a patron commissioned the renowned artist Odilon Redon to create seventeen decorative panels for the dining room. Fifteen of these works now reside in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, where they document the artist's creative evolution.
