Puig de l'Àliga, Mountain summit at French-Spanish border, Cerbère, France
Puig de l'Àliga is a summit reaching 527 meters that sits directly on the French-Spanish border between Cerbère and Portbou. The mountain consists of crystalline schist, slate, and phyllite rock formations typical of the coastal Pyrenees.
This mountain has formed the natural boundary between France and Spain since 1659, when the Treaty of the Pyrenees established the current border in this region. The border line remains physically visible across the landscape today.
Local residents from both Cerbère and Portbou maintain traditional hiking routes across the mountain, connecting French and Spanish communities through shared paths.
Well-marked trails connect Cerbère and Portbou to the summit, each route taking roughly two hours to reach the top. Proper footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are important since the exposed ridge catches sea winds and conditions change quickly.
From the summit you can see the Mediterranean Sea to the east and the Pyrenees chain extending westward at the same time. On clear days this vantage point offers an unusually broad view across both countries.
