La porte d'Espagne, City gate in Bayonne, France
The limestone gate features a drawbridge mechanism and stands as the southern entrance point to the fortified city of Bayonne.
Constructed in the fourth century as part of the original castrum, the gate received military upgrades from engineer Vauban during the seventeenth century.
The gate marked a primary transit point between France and Spain, facilitating commerce and cultural exchanges between the two nations through centuries.
Visitors can reach the gate by following Rue d'Espagne from the city center, with regular guided tours available throughout the day.
The structure includes underground casemates and a complex defensive system with a hornwork and demi-lune designed for military protection.
