Manufacture des Tabacs de Strasbourg, Industrial heritage building in Krutenau, France

The Manufacture des Tabacs de Strasbourg is an industrial building in the Krutenau district with a central courtyard surrounded by multiple wings. The complex now houses several educational institutions that occupy the former production spaces.

Built from 1849 as the prototype of Eugène Rolland's standard plan for state tobacco factories, the plant was destroyed in 1870 and 1918 and rebuilt identically, then damaged again in the September 1944 Allied bombing. From 1945 it made only cigars, nearly half of French output. Imperial Tobacco announced closure in 2008; work stopped in June 2010 with 227 employees.

The site's name lives on in the Bibliothèque de La Manufacture, opened on 2 December 2024 in around 700 m² with 100 seats and 65,000 volumes. It combines the collections of EOST, HEAR and ENGEES, and holds a scepticism (zététique) collection built up by EOST from 2019. The HEAR art school moved into the former factory in 2024.

The building stands at 7, rue de la Krutenau, with a second facade on rue Calvin. The library opened there on 2 December 2024, occupying about 700 m² with 100 seats and a catalogue of 65,000 volumes. The site is a listed monument historique since 2016.
