Vélodrome Georges-Préveral, Sports stadium and velodrome track in Lyon, France
The Vélodrome Georges-Prévéral is a sports stadium in Lyon located within Parc de la Tête d'Or, used mainly for cycling races and competitions. The track measures about 333 meters long with a bright orange resin surface that banks at approximately 43 degrees on the curves, allowing cyclists to maintain speed through the turns.
The velodrome was built in 1894, making it over 130 years old. The original track was made of earth but has been upgraded multiple times over the decades, with concrete surfaces giving way to the current synthetic material installed in the 1970s.
The velodrome is named after Georges Prévéral, a local cycling leader who worked with the cycling club starting in 1967. Each year, a special memorial event takes place that honors his contribution and brings cyclists from the region together.
The velodrome is easily accessible by public transport, bicycle, or on foot using the bike paths along the Rhone and Saone rivers. Access is typically through Parc de la Tête d'Or, and track use usually requires club membership, though special days for beginners occasionally occur.
Between 2017 and 2024, the velodrome had an unusual dual role, serving as the venue for the Lyon tennis tournament in May. The tennis court was set up right in the middle of the velodrome, creating a rare blend of two completely different sports in one location.
