Monument to Scheurer-Kestner, Marble monument in Jardin du Luxembourg, France
The Monument to Scheurer-Kestner is a marble work in the Jardin du Luxembourg featuring two human figures standing beside an obelisk. The central structure reaches about six meters in height and includes a profile medallion set into its base.
Jules Dalou designed the monument in 1899, but after his death in 1902 his students continued the work and completed it for its inauguration in 1908. This completion reflects the continuation of an artistic vision through intergenerational collaboration.
The monument honors a man who stood up for justice during a major political conflict in France. The two figures express through their contrasting attire the tension between truth and the power structures of that era.
The monument stands freely accessible in the garden beside the Senate building and is easy to reach on foot. The area is wheelchair-accessible and the best view comes during the garden's opening hours from dawn until dusk.
The two figures are distinguished by contrasting dress: one is shown naked while the other is wrapped in flowing fabrics. This pairing is uncommon and invites reflection on truth and its different forms.
