Ferdinand Fabre, Bronze sculpture in Jardin du Luxembourg, France

This bronze sculpture depicts a young shepherdess with a goat and sits among the green spaces of Jardin du Luxembourg. The work stands on a pedestal along paved paths and captures themes of rural life that featured prominently in the French writer Ferdinand Fabre's novels.

Sculptor Laurent Marqueste created this tribute to French writer Ferdinand Fabre, with the work officially unveiled on 17 January 1880. The sculpture emerged during the 19th century as a lasting honor for an author whose novels explored rural themes.

The sculpture joins 105 other statues in Jardin du Luxembourg, forming part of an extensive collection of public art installations.

The sculpture sits along the garden's paved pathways, which accommodate wheelchairs and mobility aids without obstacles. Visitors can easily spot the work while walking through the park's green areas and resting spaces.

Ferdinand Fabre died five days before his anticipated election to the French Academy, giving this sculpture a poignant historical weight. The work was created as a lasting memorial to an author who never witnessed this final recognition.
