Abbatiale Saint-Robert de La Chaise-Dieu

The Abbatiale Saint-Robert is a Gothic abbey church with thick stone walls, tall arched windows, and ornate architectural details throughout. A stone rood screen divides the interior into two separate zones, each serving different functions within the building.

Pope Clement VI commissioned the construction of this church in the 14th century and chose it as his burial site. A marble monument inside the church still marks where he was laid to rest.

The church displays 144 carved wooden choir stalls and a Dance of Death fresco showing people from all social classes, reflecting medieval views on human mortality. These works reveal how the community thought about life and its fragility.

The church has excellent acoustics and is regularly used for musical performances, especially during the festival season. Visitors should explore different areas to find their preferred vantage point and understand the layout.

The interior frescoes date from the 15th century and display painting techniques that have survived remarkably well. These works offer a direct window into medieval artistic methods and what they communicated to people of that time.
