Church of Sacred Heart, Lourdes

The Church of Sacred Heart is a Romanesque Revival structure with a prominent bell tower and three naves arranged in a Latin cross form. Inside, arches and columns create a traditional sacred space designed for worship and prayer.

Built between 1875 and 1903, this church replaced the older Saint-Pierre church where Bernadette Soubirous had worshipped. Its construction came during a period when Lourdes was becoming an important religious center.

The church houses the baptismal font where Bernadette Soubirous was baptized in 1844, connecting visitors to a key moment in her life. The tomb of Monseigneur Peyramale, the local bishop who supported her, also rests here as a spiritual landmark.

Located in the upper area of Lourdes at Place de l'Eglise, the church sits apart from the main sanctuaries, separated by the castle hill. The grounds are accessible on foot, and visitors should dress appropriately for a sacred space.

The structure features neo-Romanesque design with soaring interior spaces that draw the eye upward. Its elevated location above the castle offers visitors a different vantage point for viewing the sacred sites of Lourdes.
