Musée du Bailliage

The Musée du Bailliage occupies the first floor of the Halle aux Blés, a grain market building from the 16th century with thick stone walls and straightforward, functional rooms. The collection spans three rooms and displays objects from various periods through the Middle Ages.

The building was constructed in the 16th century as a market building for grain trade and served the local community for centuries. The objects inside come from Roman and medieval excavations that document early settlement in the area.

The museum displays religious statues and the Jacquemart automaton from the 15th century, reflecting the artistic traditions of the region. These works offer insight into the craftsmanship and beliefs of people who lived here.

The museum is housed in an easily accessible building in central Rouffach with clear signage and well-organized rooms. Access is straightforward from the street, and the collection is easy to navigate for visitors of all abilities.

The Jacquemart figures are moving bronze sculptures that operate through wheels and internal mechanisms to function automatically. This type of automaton was a rare technical achievement of its era and shows how inventive people were at that time.
