Chapelle du Collège des Jésuites, Baroque chapel in central Avignon, France.
The Chapelle du Collège des Jésuites is a Baroque building in central Avignon located on Rue de la République. It was designed with a Greek cross floor plan and topped by a dome adorned with paired windows.
The building was constructed in 1601 and consecrated in 1611 as a teaching facility for a Jesuit school. It was designed by Étienne Martellange, a Jesuit brother known for developing new approaches to architecture.
The chapel now hosts performances during the Avignon Festival and serves as home to an institute for performing arts. It has become a space where artists and visitors gather for shows and exhibitions.
The chapel is accessed through the main entrance on Rue de la République, where visitors can explore the building and its various spaces. Exhibition areas and cultural facilities are available inside, particularly during events and festivals throughout the year.
The dome rests upon a drum structure featuring diagonal openings, a distinctive element of Martellange's designs. This architectural solution provides both structural support and unusual light distribution throughout the interior.
