Collection Lambert occupies two 18th-century mansion buildings in Avignon, offering spacious rooms for displaying contemporary artworks. These restored structures provide multiple galleries where exhibitions change regularly and showcase international artists.
Yvon Lambert opened his private collection to the public in July 2000 in the hôtel de Caumont, with 450 works on display. In November 2011 he donated 450 works inalienably to the French state, on condition that the museum be extended into the neighbouring hôtel de Montfaucon. The new building, designed by Berger & Berger with Christiane Schmuckle-Mollard, opened in July 2015.
The museum houses artworks from artists across generations who shaped contemporary art in Europe and beyond. Visitors encounter pieces that represent different movements and geographic origins, all brought together under one roof.
The location sits in the heart of Avignon's old town and is easily reached on foot. Visitors should allow enough time to walk through the galleries at a comfortable pace.
In 2007, visitor Rindy Sam kissed a Cy Twombly canvas devoted to Plato's Phaedrus, leaving a lipstick mark; she was ordered to pay 18,400 euros in restoration costs. The museum answered with an exhibition titled "J'embrasse pas" the following winter.
