Maison forte de Gourville

The Maison forte de Gourville is a fortified residential building in Prunay-en-Yvelines with thick stone walls, a watchtower, and multiple interior levels designed for both defense and living. The structure contains guard rooms, kitchens, and sleeping quarters arranged to serve both military and domestic purposes.

The building was constructed in the early 15th century by François de Brilhac, an abbot connected to a Benedictine community near Chartres. It was later transformed into a residence for bishops, marking a change in its purpose and occupants.

The rooms contain original fireplaces that show how medieval noble families lived and organized their daily spaces. These preserved elements reveal the customs and comforts available to residents during that period.

The property is privately owned and visits require advance arrangements with the owner. Access is limited and varies throughout the year, so planning ahead is necessary before traveling there.

A northern wing was added during the 17th century and features a four-sided roof that once functioned as a guardhouse. This later addition demonstrates how building techniques and defense needs evolved from the original construction.
