Chapel Our Lady of the Good Help of Fontainebleau, chapel located in Seine-et-Marne, in France

The chapel Our Lady of the Good Help stands at the northern end of Boulevard Maréchal-Foch, at the edge of the Fontainebleau forest. It is an open square pavilion on four plain light-beige stone columns, front and rear, under a shallow pyramidal roof of reddish-brown tiles with a thin metal cross at its apex. Behind a low stone wall and a rust-red metal fence with a matching gate, a recessed inner structure holds the altar; two small plaques with unreadable text flank the gate.

A first oratory was built in 1690 on the spot where, in 1661, the rider Dauberon invoked the Virgin and his runaway horse stopped; it was destroyed in 1793. In 1821 Marie-Thérèse, duchesse d'Angoulême, knelt here and wished for a new chapel, built on the old foundations to plans by palace architect Maximilien-Joseph Hurtault and blessed on 30 September 1821. Napoleon III ordered repairs in 1864, funded with 6,000 francs from the imperial couple, and the chapel was listed as a monument historique in 1926.

The chapel is also called Notre-Dame-de-la-Bonne-Dame, after the legend of a rider saved in 1661. Each first Sunday of October the parish clergy walk here in procession, a custom kept since the 1821 blessing. Access is limited to ceremonies, so the interior is seen during those services.

A levelling mark by the gate records the chapel's altitude as 90.047 metres above sea level. The site is also linked to a second horse accident: on 18 April 1912, Lieutenant Ghislain Touzet du Vigier, of the 18th Dragoon Regiment, fell opposite the chapel and died of a skull fracture.
