The building predates the arrival of the Benedictine nuns, likely constructed in the 16th century, possibly as a fortified house. The nuns occupied it from around 1650 until the French Revolution, after which religious life there came to an end. The site was listed as a historic monument in 1985.
The site is located in the Cour du Vieux Couvent in the center of Vimoutiers and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors can view the exterior facades from the courtyard, though access to the interior may be limited depending on the time of year.
