Notre-Dame-des-Carmes

Notre-Dame-des-Carmes is a Gothic church in Pont-l'Abbé with a single nave lined with wooden paneling. A large rose window measuring 7.70 meters in diameter adorns the choir and stands as a distinctive interior feature.

The church was built between 1383 and 1406 under the direction of Hervé IV du Pont and Péronnelle de Rochefort for a Carmelite community. This extended construction period reflects the effort required to complete the structure according to Gothic principles.

The stone and wooden altarpieces came from donations by local guilds of shoemakers and apothecaries in the 17th century. These works show how wealthy craftspeople expressed their connection to this place and shaped it.

A grand organ restored in 1990 retains original pipes from 1666 and can be heard during religious services. Visitors should check the schedule of regular services to experience the church in full activity.

The slate helmet-shaped bell tower was constructed in 1603 and represents an unusual architectural element in the Lower Brittany region. This distinctive roof sets it apart from other Gothic churches in the surrounding area.
