Pointe du Creux Noir, Alpine summit in Vanoise National Park, France
Pointe du Creux Noir is a 3,113-metre summit in the Vanoise, on the border of Planay and Pralognan-la-Vanoise. Its top is a broad crest of pale grey, fractured layered rock; below it, steep slopes of grey rock and grass patches fall toward a band of dark coniferous trees. Pointe du Vallonet, 3,372 metres, rises 1.3 km to the north.
The summit stands in Vanoise National Park, established in 1963 as the first national park in the French Alps. The creation of the park marked the beginning of systematic protection for this alpine landscape.
The summit lies in the Vanoise, where the massif's name comes from a local Alpine term recorded in Savoyard usage. Its position above Planay and Pralognan-la-Vanoise places it within the area grazed seasonally before the park's creation, and herders' paths still cross the lower slopes.
The summit lies at 3,113 m, about 1.3 km south of Pointe du Vallonet, the higher neighbour at 3,372 m. The nearest town is Aime, roughly 18.5 km to the north-east. Approach from the Planay and Pralognan-la-Vanoise side; the upper slopes are bare rock, scree and patches of snow, so plan for cold conditions and carry equipment for steep, loose ground.
Pointe du Vallonet, 3,372 m, lies 1.3 km north of the summit and is the highest point in the immediate area, standing 259 m above Pointe du Creux Noir. The two peaks belong to the same massif above Planay and Pralognan-la-Vanoise.
