Aiguille du Passon, Mountain summit in Mont Blanc Massif, France
Aiguille du Passon is a mountain summit reaching 3389 meters in the Mont Blanc Massif, characterized by sharp rock formations and glacial terrain. The ridge connecting the peak features steep flanks on both sides with exposed stone and ice.
The summit was first reached by mountaineers in the late 19th century through the steep rock faces. It later became a training ground for aspiring alpinists from the Chamonix region.
The name Aiguille, meaning needle in French, reflects the local tradition of naming peaks after their distinctive pointed shapes.
Access from Chamonix Valley is easiest via the Grands Montets cable car, followed by a technical climb across glacial terrain. Climbers need crampons, ice axes, and safety equipment for the ascent.
The Col du Passon at 3028 meters serves mountaineers as a gateway connecting the Argentière Basin with the Tour Glacier. The passage between these two areas is narrower than typical alpine routes, requiring careful footing.
